If you had told me 15 years ago that one day I'd be a licensed acupuncturist, I would have said you were crazy.
Back then, I was a successful journalist. I'd begun my career in Pittsburgh and later relocated to Washington, D.C. My work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, U.S. News & World Report, Washingtonian Magazine and many other publications. I wrote about health, fitness, medicine, sports, and local government. I authored columns and investigative pieces. I even covered an Olympic Games. I loved my career and expected to be in it for life.
The universe had other plans. In my late 40's, I began to feel ill. Walking a city block left me in need of a nap. Suddenly, I needed to rest between flights of stairs leading to my third-story apartment, instead of bounding up them. I experienced joint aches, severe anxiety, insomnia, weight gain, and brain fog so incapacitating it took me hours to write a single paragraph.
Over 18 months, I visited specialists, enrolled in a research study, tried medications, all to no avail. Eventually, I was diagnosed with two autoimmune conditions. A rheumatologist said I would likely experience brief remissions; otherwise, I'd just have to "gut it out." His words didn't sit right. I felt scared yet somehow convinced an effective treatment was out there somewhere. I just had to find it. I had to find it as someone who wasn't a fan of harsh medications that came with weight gain, potential organ damage, addiction, or other intrusive side effects.
At my lowest, my primary care physician mentioned acupuncture, suggesting that a couple of her patients seemed to be benefiting. She handed me the business card of a local practitioner. I figured acupuncture was akin to drinking snake oil but I was at that point.
During my intake, the acupuncturist lightly rested three fingertips on my radial pulse. "So you have a lot of UTI's," he asked. I nodded. Now he had my attention. After that first treatment, I felt a pervasive calm, and I felt heard. Fast forward through three months of twice-weekly treatments and some dietary tweaks. I was feeling like myself again! Energetic. Clear-minded. Pain-free.
Thrilled, I enrolled in acupuncture school. I had always been fascinated by medicine, albeit the conventional type. Chinese Medicine taught me that finding a means of reducing pain and anxiety without relying on multiple surgeries and heavy-duty medications is the key to finding true wellness! It reminded me that our bodies are frequently capable of healing themselves with the help of gentle holistic therapies and healthy lifestyle practices.
I provide authentic listening and teach individuals how to get quiet enough to hear the messages their bodies send every day -- messages about pain, fatigue, digestion, and stress. I believe our bodies are wise, that if we are able to tune into them, we can often prevent the onset of disease and heal from chronic conditions. Studies suggest that making health a daily priority can add years to your life.
I believe we are more powerful than we know, that the the critical ingredient to healing and remaining healthy lies in achieving balance. It can be tough to find balance in the busy-ness of this fast-paced world. But I want you to know it is possible and so worth attaining! If you're craving balance, I'd love to help you. This medicine helped me get my life back and I believe it can help you, too!
Come in. Let's talk. Let's start you on a path to health and healing today!

Dana Scarton (she/her/hers) is a licensed acupuncturist and owner of The Zen Point in Bethesda. She studied acupuncture at Maryland University of Integrative Health, graduating with a master's degree and going on to attain a national certification.
Her interests lie in treating pain, anxiety, chronic conditions, sports injuries, and helping patients engage in preventative healthcare so that they might enjoy mental and physical health throughout a long lifespan.
In addition to Five Element and Traditional Chinese Medicine training, Dana is skilled in the Balance Method, which allows her to treat pain without needling into or near the painful area -- for instance, treating an injured elbow by needling near a knee. She has studied Acutonics, the application of tuning fork vibrations to acupuncture points, an especially effective treatment for sleep and anxiety. She has studied microneedling with four different instructors and uses the award-winning microneedling device by Procell in conjunction with holistic cleansers and serums designed to promote new collagen and healthier skin.
Her newest passion is Electro-Acupuncture Medicine (EAM), which not only balances the body (like traditional acupuncture) but adds energy to help the body heal. EAM tends to produce quicker and longer-lasting results.
Dana continues to study the latest advances in EAM with Dr. Jeremy Steiner, who has a world-wide following. She regularly receives EAM to boost immunity and is consistently amazed with its results.
We treat children as young as four as well as adults. Dana has helped children and teens who have presented with migraines, anxiety, and GI issues. When young people -- and adults -- are apprehensive about needles, other forms of treatment can be used.
One popular non-needle modality is Acutonics, the practice of using tuning forks vibrations on acupuncture points. This ultra-calming technique is an exceptional treatment for anxiety, stress, and sleep. Children love it! Adults tend to fall asleep! We will work with you every step of the way to ensure that you receive the best possible care.
High school, college, and semi-pro athletes as well as middle-age and older adults have seen Dana to deal with sports injuries and muscular pain, including back, neck, hip, knee, hand, and shoulder issues.
Studies show acupuncture to be an effective treatment for pain. What's more, Dana was a college and high school athlete so she understands the situations many of her patients present with.
But don't just come to us when you're injured. Acupuncture can also help you recover from a strenuous workout or competition more quickly, keep your muscles flexible, reduce anxiety, improve sleep and focus, and build immunity.

"Dana is an outstanding practitioner! Our paths crossed when I was in a season of transition and tremendous overwhelm. In every session with Dana, I was met with compassion, grace, and active listening. Beyond her intuitive understanding of mood and emotions, she has a wealth of knowledge that guides her practice. I felt relief after just the first few sessions. Dana was able to cater treatments to not only reduce my anxiety, but to also help with headaches, menstrual cramps, and other symptoms I was having. I am forever grateful for my time with her! " -- Sierra S.
"I have been suffering with osteoarthritis of the hip for several years. I tried acupuncture off and on with no real improvement until I found Dana. After a few sessions, I was able to walk with less pain." -- Sandra B.
"I cannot say enough about the personalized and compassionate acupuncture care Dana provides. She takes the time to listen and to address your individual needs - even when they change from week to week or month to month. Her knowledge and professionalism are top notch - she answers questions and explains things so that you know what to expect during your treatment. I have been to a variety of acupuncturists throughout my wellness journey, and she is by far the one I would only recommend to others." -- Terrie H.

Acupuncture involves the placement of hair-thin, single-use needles at specific points on the body to help restore the smooth flow of energy, or QI (pronounced "Chee"). Disruption of qi creates physical and emotional pain and is thought to lead to disease.
Acupuncture treats a wide range of conditions, including gastrointestinal pain, muscular and joint pain, headaches, migraines, nausea, insomnia, anxiety, back and neck pain, sinus pressure, and so much more! It treats both chronic illness and acute conditions.
Studies show that placement of a needle in an acupuncture point triggers biological and chemical changes in the brain. Some of these changes reduce pain and help to regulate physical and emotional function and restore the body's overall balance.
People describe the insertion of an acupuncture needle in many ways -- a dull sensation, a momentary pinch, or a mild pressure. Frequently, patients feel nothing at all. Most find the treatments to be ultra-relaxing. Some people fall asleep! If the insertion of needles on certain points is uncomfortable, other points can be needled or sticker-like press needles can be applied.
Every patient is unique. Therefore, every treatment schedule is individualized. On average, expect to undergo eight to 12 sessions before noticing significant change. Chronic conditions or longstanding pain or injury may require extended treatment plans and the addition of other modalities such as cupping or gua sha.
